LGBTQ+ Education and Research at the University of Warsaw

University of Warsaw Research Centers and Laboratories Related to Gender, Queer, and LGBTQ+

The University has active research centers and initiatives that support the development of knowledge and an inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community:

  • Center for Queer Social Research – Institute of Applied Social Sciences
    This center conducts research combining queer theory and postcolonial perspectives. Its director, Professor Jacek Kochanowski, lectures on queer sociology. The center also engages in social debates regarding the oppression and resistance of the LGBTQ+ community, both in Polish and international contexts.

  • Research Center for LGBT+ History and Identities – Institute of Applied Social Sciences
    Focuses on the study of LGBTQ+ identity and history, using biographical methods to collect and document autobiographical accounts of non-heteronormative communities. Recently, the Workshop published the publication “Queer in Poland. Autobiographies.

  • Gender/Sexuality Lab – American Studies Center
    The interdisciplinary team explores the cultural dimensions of gender and sexuality, drawing on perspectives from queer studies, culture, literature, and social theory. The Lab’s work features a collection of publications, research projects, and the podcast “Tame gender”.

Education Opportunities in Gender and Queer at the University of Warsaw

The University of Warsaw offers several educational programs focused on gender, sexuality, and related topics:

  • Gender and Sexuality” Master’s Degree – Institute of Polish Culture
    Introduced in the 2025/26 academic year, this interdisciplinary, Polish-language program analyzes cultural and social phenomena related to gender and sexuality. Students explore topics such as the significance of same-sex marriage, reproductive health, cultural conflicts surrounding transgenderism, and the impact of social class on gender discourse.

  • Postgraduate studies „Gender Studies” – Institute of Applied Social Sciences
    An interdisciplinary, Polish-language, program combining sociology, psychology, law, history, cultural theory and literary theory The goal is to analyze and deconstruct gender stereotypes and broaden scholarly perspectives to include the experiences of women and men. Courses span a variety of disciplines, with offering changing each semester.
