Equal opportunities in recruitment

The University of Warsaw undertakes planned and systematic actions to ensure equal access to education and employment. These measures specifically include recruitment activities addressed to underrepresented groups in particular fields of education, research, and work at the University. Initiatives cover recruitment to degree programmes, doctoral schools, as well as the employment of academic and administrative staff, and are implemented both at the institutional level and through specialised University units.

Detailed information regarding the University of Warsaw’s recruitment procedures can be found here (avaliable in Polish).

The purpose of these actions is to reduce barriers to access to studies and employment at the University of Warsaw, counteract persistent inequalities, and support the diversity of the academic community. These measures include, among others, information and promotional activities, organisational solutions applied within recruitment processes, as well as programmes and projects addressed to selected groups, including women in underrepresented fields, persons with disabilities, and other groups requiring additional support in access to education and employment.

The University places particular emphasis on initiatives addressed to women, especially in areas of education and research in which they remain underrepresented. These initiatives cover both recruitment to degree programmes and measures supporting academic career development, including information and promotional activities aimed at encouraging participation in studies and research work in selected fields. Such activities are carried out within the framework of University-wide initiatives, STEM-related programmes, as well as projects implemented at faculty and organisational unit levels, remaining closely linked to the Gender Equality Plan.

In the area of support for persons with disabilities and neurodiverse individuals, a key role is played by the Office for Persons with Disabilities, which coordinates the University’s actions in ensuring equal access to education and employment. The Office is responsible for providing information, organising necessary adjustments, and offering support throughout recruitment processes. The solutions applied include both organisational and technical accommodations as well as individual forms of assistance, enabling full and equal participation in academic life.

More information is available on the website of the Office for Persons with Disabilities as well as on our page dedicated to support for neurodiverse people.

Actions addressed to individuals enrolled in doctoral schools or at an early stage of academic careers are primarily implemented within the framework of the doctoral school system and transparent recruitment procedures. The University places emphasis on ensuring transparency, equal treatment, and high-quality recruitment processes, as well as on creating conditions conducive to academic and professional development at early stages of an academic career. These activities are complemented by quality-enhancing and equality-oriented initiatives aimed at counteracting structural barriers and supporting diversity in the research environment.

Regarding academic and administrative staff, the University of Warsaw applies open and competitive recruitment procedures based on principles of transparency and equal access to employment. At the same time, measures are undertaken to increase diversity among staff and to create an inclusive working environment that accommodates the varied needs and experiences of employees. These initiatives are consistent with the University’s existing equality policies and equal treatment principles implemented across the institution.

All of these activities form a coherent institutional system, linked to the implementation of the University of Warsaw’s strategic documents, in particular the Gender Equality Plan, the Inclusive Gender Equality Plan 2025–2029, and equal treatment policies. Recruitment and employment measures thus constitute an integral element of the University’s broader strategy in the areas of equality, diversity, and inclusivity, contributing to the long-term goal of developing a responsible and open academic institution.
